An Ode to the Greatest in the Game

There is no denying the fact that football is regarded as one of the most popular games in the world. Afterall, it is what we spend almost our Sunday nights watching on our televisions from our respective homes at G Residen, Seni Mont Kiara and Pantai Hillpark

The sport is a global phenomenon, currently played across 200 countries, with its popularity increasing even with time. Moreover, the 2018 FIFA world cup final held in Russia was watched by nearly 4 billion people worldwide, making it the most watched sporting event of all time.Football fans watched it across sports cafes, while others tuned in from their homes at rent room G Residence KL, Seni Mont Kiara Kuala Lumpur for sale, and Pantai Hillpark rent

Football is also one of the oldest sports, having been played since centuries, with the first professional football game taking place in 1869. The match, now a defining moment in sports history, took place between the Allegheny Athletic Association and Allegheny Athletic Association, where AAA player William Heffelfinge was paid $500 to play, thus making him the first professional football player in history.

Since then, many players have made their mark on the game with their immense talent. Here are three of the greatest athletes football ever produced.

Diego Maradona (Argentina)

Diego Maradona is widely regarded as the best footballer of the 80s, and one of the greatest athletes of all time, having won the FIFA Player of the Century alongside Pelé in  2000. Maradona also broke the world record for the most expensive transfer twice when he transferred to Barcelona and then later to Napoli.

However, his greatest achievement came during the 86 World Cup when he not only  captained Argentina, led them to victory against Germany and scored five goals, but also finished off as the tournament’s best player, and was awarded with the Golden Ball. During the quarter final of the same world cup, Maradona scored two goals against England, defeating them 2-1.

Both goals cemented their place within football history, with the first one being an unpenalized handling foul, nicknamed the “hand of God” and the second which came only 4 minutes later, was a 60 m dribble that came to be known as “the goal of the century” as voted by FIFA.com.

Pelé (Brazil)

Brazilian born Pelé is often considered the greatest the game ever produced and has received several accolades over the years as a result. In 1999, he was given the title of “Player of the Century” by the  International Federation of Football History & Statistics. He was also the co-recipient of the 2000 FIFA “Player of the Century” award and was even elected “Athlete of the Century” by the International Olympic Committee the same year.

Obviously this comes as no surprise considering that the man has scored a record 650 goals in his career, and is a 3-time World Cup winner. Simultaneously he also holds the record of being the youngest player in a World Cup, appearing in the 58 final aged just 17. He is often called football’s first superstar, and rightly so.

Lionel Messi (Argentina)

Captain of both the Spanish club Barcelona as well as his national team Argentina, Lionel Messi is often called the greatest footballer of his generation alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi is Barcelona’s all-time top scorer, having scored a total of 657 goals across competitions, and holds the club-record of 34 trophies including the UEFA Champions League, and a La Liga. Even as captain of Argentina, he holds the record for the all-time leading goalscorer, having scored 70 goals for his national team and lead them to 3 consecutive

As of last year, Messi is also the world’s highest-paid athlete as listed by Forbes.

Given the immense popularity of the game, it’s no wonder that KL is opening up more and more sports cafes and bars such as Hall of Fame and Gridiron, where fans can come to celebrate football and meet other fans over drinks. Conveniently, these cafes are within the vicinity of popular residential areas such as rent room G Residence, and Pantai Hillpark condo.
